Chicago, IL – The National Weather Service in Chicago is warning of elevated fire danger across northern Illinois on Sunday, October 5, as warm, dry, and breezy weather continues. Forecasters say these unseasonably warm conditions, with highs in the mid-80s possible near farmland, could quickly lead to brush fire ignition and spread.

According to the National Weather Service, the elevated fire risk is expected to persist through Sunday evening before a shift in weather patterns. A period of rain is likely late Monday into Tuesday, offering some relief from the dry stretch.

Temperatures are forecast to reach between 83–87°F Sunday before cooling to mid-70s Monday and low 60s to 70s Tuesday as rain moves through. By midweek, cooler and calmer conditions are expected to return, with highs around 63–70°F Wednesday and mid-60s Thursday.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly discard cigarette butts, and secure any potential fire-starting materials. Fire officials remind the public that even minor sparks can ignite dry grass or fields under current conditions.
