Chicago, Illinois – Dense fog is causing dangerous travel conditions from Chicago southward to Kankakee and Pontiac overnight into Monday morning, sharply reducing visibility for early commuters.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9:00 a.m. CDT, with the thickest fog south of the Illinois and Kankakee rivers. Forecasters warn visibility may fall below a quarter mile at times, especially along I-57, I-55, and surrounding rural highways. Additional dense fog could develop farther north through sunrise, impacting travel near Joliet, Elgin, and Valparaiso.
Hazardous driving conditions are expected, with sudden changes in visibility and the risk of slowed or halted traffic. Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights. The morning rush around Chicago, Joliet, and suburban Cook and Will counties could be especially impacted, with potential delays for Metra and school bus routes.
