Chicago, Illinois – Localized strong storms could impact northern Illinois Thursday afternoon, with damaging winds as the primary threat heading into the holiday weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, scattered thunderstorms may form through 10 p.m. tonight, mainly in far northern areas, bringing gusty winds. On Thursday, isolated afternoon and evening storms could develop, with the greatest threat focused along and north of I-80, including areas from Peru to Evanston.

Heat and humidity will surge starting Friday, with peak heat indices reaching 95–100°F across central and northern Illinois. While the 4th of July will be hot, conditions won’t be as oppressive as late June. Saturday could bring the highest storm chances late in the day, especially across northwestern Illinois.

Sunday remains humid, with rain and thunderstorms possible across much of the region. Travelers and holiday planners should prepare for changing conditions, stay weather-aware, and limit outdoor activities during peak heat.

Additional alerts may be issued as storm timing and severity become clearer through the weekend.
