Cheyenne, Wyoming – A Fire Weather Watch has been issued from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday for southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle, where wind gusts up to 45 mph and humidity as low as 15 percent could accelerate wildfire spread near Interstate 25 and Interstate 80.

According to the US National Weather Service in Cheyenne, relative humidity values are expected to fall between 15 and 20 percent during the afternoon hours. At the same time, southwest winds will increase, with gusts potentially exceeding 45 mph across open areas.

The combination of dry air, strong winds and receptive fuels creates favorable conditions for rapid fire growth. Locations including Cheyenne, Laramie, Scottsbluff and Sidney may experience the most critical overlap of wind and low humidity during peak heating hours.

Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning and advise residents to avoid activities that could produce sparks, including dragging trailer chains or parking vehicles on dry grass. Fires that start under these conditions can spread quickly along roadways such as I-25, I-80, U.S. Highway 26 and U.S. Highway 385.

While no widespread precipitation is expected to offset the dry pattern Thursday, forecasters will continue monitoring conditions for potential upgrades or additional fire weather statements.

Truck drivers and commuters traveling along high-profile corridors may also encounter strong crosswinds during the afternoon.

Residents across southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle are urged to stay weather-aware and follow guidance from local emergency management officials.
