Cheyenne, WY — Powerful winds continue to impact the Cheyenne area and much of southeast Wyoming, with damaging gusts recorded Friday and more strong winds expected through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, peak wind gusts over the past 12 hours have ranged from 65 to nearly 90 miles per hour across the region. The strongest gust reported was 88 mph at Halleck Ridge in Carbon County, one of several wind-prone locations experiencing extreme conditions.

In the Cheyenne area, gusts reached 75 mph at Cheyenne Regional Airport, while nearby locations including Torrington Airport (76 mph), Douglas Airport (74 mph), and Arlington and Elk Mountain corridors (74–80 mph) also reported dangerous winds. Interstate corridors such as I-25 and I-80, particularly near Arlington, Bordeaux, and Elk Mountain, remain among the most hazardous areas for travel.

The National Weather Service said winds Friday were slightly weaker than earlier in the week but remain strong enough to cause blowing dust, difficult travel, and potential damage. Gusty west to northwest winds are expected to continue through Saturday morning, especially in traditionally wind-prone locations.

Officials warn that high-profile vehicles, including semitrailers, campers, and empty trucks, face an elevated risk of blowovers. Motorists are urged to check road conditions and consider delaying travel if possible.

Strong winds may also lead to downed tree limbs, isolated power disruptions, and blowing debris, particularly in open and elevated areas. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for sudden gusts.

While winds are expected to gradually decrease later Saturday, forecasters caution that periods of strong gusts may persist, especially near mountain gaps and ridgelines.

The National Weather Service encourages residents and travelers to monitor updates at weather.gov/cys and follow guidance from the Wyoming Department of Transportation before heading out.
