Cheyenne, Wyoming – Smoke-filled skies and gusty winds are combining to create dangerous air conditions across Wyoming through Friday morning, with an air quality alert in effect until 12 a.m. MDT.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a cold front sweeping southward is pushing wildfire smoke from higher altitudes down to the surface. As a result, poor air quality is expected statewide, especially in areas already experiencing dry conditions. North winds are expected to reach 10–20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph this afternoon.

The smoke may significantly reduce visibility and increase health risks, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Residents are advised to limit outdoor exertion and stay indoors with filtered air whenever possible.

Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, and Rock Springs are among the cities expected to see the worst smoke concentrations. While a few isolated rain showers could develop after sunset, they are unlikely to provide significant relief from the smoke.

Air quality is expected to improve by Friday morning as winds shift and wildfire smoke disperses. Another update will be issued if conditions worsen or extend.
