Cheyenne, WY — Falling overnight temperatures could cause slush and standing water to refreeze, creating slick roads and black ice across parts of southeast Wyoming by Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, skies are expected to clear Friday evening as snow and gusty winds move out of the region, allowing temperatures to drop overnight.

Forecasters say leftover slush and pooled water from Friday’s precipitation may freeze as temperatures fall, potentially producing patchy black ice on roads, sidewalks and parking lots early Saturday.

The risk is highest late overnight into early Saturday morning, when temperatures across the region are expected to dip into the single digits and teens in some locations.

Areas including Cheyenne, Laramie, Wheatland, Torrington and Douglas could see icy conditions where moisture remains on road surfaces.

Black ice can be especially dangerous because it is difficult to see on pavement, increasing the risk of slippery travel conditions and minor crashes during early morning hours.

Forecasters say warmer, dry and windy weather is expected to return Saturday and continue into much of next week, which should gradually improve road conditions later in the day.

Early morning commuters, students and weekend travelers across southeast Wyoming may want to allow extra travel time and watch for slick spots on bridges, overpasses and shaded roadways.
