Cheyenne, Wyoming – Wind chill values near 15 degrees below zero could freeze exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes along I-25 and I-80 by 6 a.m. Friday, creating dangerous conditions for early commuters and anyone outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, very cold air has settled across southeast Wyoming, with afternoon highs Thursday struggling to reach 30 degrees. Skies will gradually clear overnight, allowing temperatures to drop sharply. Even a light breeze will push wind chills well below zero by sunrise Friday.
The coldest readings are expected across Laramie County, including Cheyenne, Pine Bluffs and Burns. Drivers along I-80 toward Laramie and along I-25 north toward Wheatland should prepare for icy patches developing on untreated bridges and overpasses as temperatures fall into the single digits overnight.
Saturday morning may feel even colder as slightly stronger winds combine with subzero air. Forecast wind chills could dip into the minus 10 to minus 20 range across the High Plains, especially in open areas west of Cheyenne.
Residents should limit time outdoors during the early morning hours, wear layered clothing and insulated gloves, and ensure pets have adequate shelter. Check vehicle batteries, keep fuel tanks at least half full and carry winter survival supplies if traveling before 9 a.m.
Temperatures will moderate slightly during the afternoon hours, but frigid mornings are expected to continue through Saturday. Additional cold weather advisories could be issued if wind chill values trend lower.
