Cheyenne, Wyoming – High winds are triggering weight-based closures along Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Rawlins beginning Tuesday evening.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol and the Wyoming Department of Transportation, I-80 is closed to Light, High-Profile Vehicles (LHPV) under 40,000 pounds along the corridor. Officials cited strengthening winds capable of overturning lighter and high-profile vehicles.

In addition, Interstate 25 from Wheatland to Douglas is closed to LHPV under 20,000 pounds due to dangerous crosswinds.

Authorities warn that wind speeds are expected to increase as the day progresses, raising the risk of blowovers — particularly for semitrailers, empty trailers, campers, and box trucks. Past wind events in southeast Wyoming have resulted in overturned commercial vehicles along both I-80 and I-25.

Drivers traveling between Cheyenne and Rawlins on I-80, or north-south between Wheatland and Douglas on I-25, should check WYDOT’s 511 system for updated road conditions before departing.

Weight-based closures are issued when sustained winds or gusts create rollover risks based on vehicle profile and load weight. Restrictions may expand or change depending on wind intensity.

Truck drivers, delivery vehicles, and commuters in high-profile SUVs or vans may experience the greatest impact.

Officials urge motorists to delay travel if operating lighter or empty high-profile vehicles until conditions improve.

Additional updates will be provided through WYDOT and the Wyoming Highway Patrol as wind conditions evolve.
