Cheyenne, Wyoming – A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Cheyenne area and much of southeast Wyoming, with dangerous wind gusts expected to create hazardous travel conditions through Saturday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, the warning began at 11 p.m. Friday and remains in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday for wind-prone areas of southeast Wyoming. Wind gusts between 60 and 65 mph are possible, especially in traditionally exposed corridors and elevated terrain.
Forecasters say these strong winds could make travel hazardous for light, high-profile, or empty vehicles, including semitrailers, campers, and SUVs. Sudden gusts may cause vehicles to sway or lose control, particularly along Interstate 25, Interstate 80, and surrounding highways. Drivers are urged to use caution, reduce speeds, and consider delaying travel if possible.
In addition to travel concerns, the high winds may lead to blowing debris, difficult conditions for outdoor activities, and isolated power disruptions. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.
The strongest winds are expected from late Friday night through Saturday afternoon, before gradually easing Saturday evening. While skies are expected to remain mostly dry, the lack of precipitation will not reduce the wind hazard.
The National Weather Service advises travelers to check Wyoming 511 for the latest road conditions and restrictions, especially for high-profile vehicles that may be subject to closures during peak wind periods.
This warning is particularly relevant for long-haul truck drivers, weekend travelers, and anyone driving exposed roadways across the Cheyenne area and southeast Wyoming.
Residents should continue monitoring official forecasts and alerts until winds subside and the High Wind Warning expires Saturday evening.
