Cheyenne, Wyoming – Drivers crossing the I-80 summit should prepare for slushy roads and poor visibility as a late-season snowstorm brings 5 to 10 inches of accumulation to the Snowy Range through early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday for high-elevation east-facing slopes above 8,500 feet. The heaviest snow will fall today and tonight on the eastern side of the range, with light to moderate snowfall likely.
Travel along I-80 near the summit will be particularly hazardous through this evening. A few inches of slushy snow could accumulate across the highest elevations, especially between Laramie and Rawlins. Visibility may be reduced at times, and the Wyoming Department of Transportation advises extra caution and delays for mountain travelers.
This snowfall, though typical for May in the higher terrain, is one of the more notable late-season events so far this spring. Residents in Albany and Carbon counties should monitor road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
Winter Weather Advisories remain in place through early Wednesday, with additional updates expected if snowfall intensifies or persists longer than forecasted.
