Goodland, Kansas – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across northwest Kansas Monday afternoon and evening, threatening damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours for residents in Cheyenne, Greeley, Logan, Rawlins, Sherman, Thomas, Wallace, and Wichita counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for these counties until 9 p.m. MDT Monday. The alert covers key stretches of I-70 and major highways, with the strongest storms likely to impact Goodland, Colby, and Sharon Springs. Forecasters warn of wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to quarter size, with isolated power outages and hazardous travel possible, especially on rural roads.

Local emergency managers urge residents to stay indoors, secure outdoor items, and have a way to receive warnings. If traveling, avoid flooded roads and be prepared for sudden visibility drops from heavy rain. Area schools and businesses are monitoring the situation, with updates expected by early evening if conditions worsen.

This is the first widespread severe weather event of July for northwest Kansas, arriving amid a hot, humid stretch typical for early summer. The watch could be extended or upgraded if storms intensify.

Warnings remain in effect until 9 p.m. MDT. Monitor local alerts for the latest updates.
