Chester County, SC – Residents across Chester County could see increased law enforcement coverage in the coming years after county leaders approved a major federal grant aimed at expanding patrol operations.

According to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office, the agency has been selected to receive a 2025 COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. County Council voted Monday night to officially accept the award, clearing the way for the first significant expansion of sheriff’s office staffing in years.

The grant provides $750,000 in federal funding as part of a $1.31 million total investment to increase patrol deputies throughout the county. Under the agreement, Chester County will implement a 1:1 hiring match, ultimately adding 12 new patrol deputy positions through a phased, three-year plan.

Sheriff Max Dorsey said the expansion is critical as Chester County continues to grow geographically and in population. The county spans roughly 580 square miles, and staffing levels have increased by fewer than five positions over the past five years.

“This grant is about building the capacity to meet the demands of the Chester County of tomorrow,” Dorsey said. He added that the goal is to improve coverage, reduce response times, and ensure residents receive consistent law enforcement services regardless of location.

Since 2020, the sheriff’s office reports it has worked to reduce crime, strengthen community relationships, and provide 24/7 protection for municipalities despite limited resources.

Implementation of the new positions will begin with the July 1, 2026 budget year. Initially, four deputies will be hired—two funded through the grant and two funded by the county—with additional hires to follow as the program progresses.

County officials say the plan leverages federal dollars to minimize the local tax burden while making long-term investments in public safety infrastructure.
