Chemung County, NY – A burglary attempt in the Town of Southport led to an arrest Thursday after a witness reported seeing a suspect actively trying to force entry into a vacant home.
According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched Thursday, January 15, to a reported burglary in progress in Southport. A witness told authorities they were observing a man attempting to break into the residence.
Deputies arriving in the area determined the suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Trea N. Dryers of Elmira, had fled the scene on a bicycle. A deputy subsequently located Dryers nearby and initiated an interview, officials said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Dryers allegedly attempted to flee again but was ultimately detained. Deputies reported finding him in possession of a screwdriver, which investigators say was allegedly intended to be used to force entry into the residence.
The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division assisted at the scene, where evidence connected to the attempted burglary was recovered.
Dryers was arrested and charged with Attempted Burglary in the Third Degree, a Class E felony. He also faces several Class A misdemeanor charges, including Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree, and Possession of Burglar Tools.
Authorities said Dryers was processed and issued appearance tickets. He is scheduled to appear in Town of Southport Court at a later date.
Officials did not report any injuries, and the residence involved was vacant at the time of the incident.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity immediately to law enforcement.
