BUFFALO, NY – A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect for Chautauqua County, including Jamestown, until 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
Forecasters report that 6 to 10 inches of additional snow is possible in the most persistent lake effect bands, particularly along the Chautauqua Ridge, while areas near the Lake Erie shoreline may see little to no accumulation. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, producing blowing snow and poor visibility.
The NWS warns that travel will be difficult, especially during the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. Snowfall rates could reach one inch per hour, leading to rapid changes in driving conditions across short distances.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and use caution when driving, as conditions may shift from light snow to near whiteout within minutes. The heaviest snow is expected overnight into early Tuesday morning, before tapering by early afternoon.
This system marks a significant early-season lake effect event for western New York, with potential for power disruptions and difficult road maintenance due to drifting snow.
