Charlotte, N.C. – Heavy rain and thunderstorms could slow commutes across Charlotte and much of central North Carolina through Saturday night, with the heaviest downpours expected Saturday afternoon. Roads may become slick and localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service, storm chances increase Friday afternoon into evening with a 70% chance of thunderstorms developing after 2 p.m. Rain may be heavy at times, with additional thunderstorms possible overnight into Saturday. Conditions will worsen Saturday as widespread showers move across the Piedmont, carrying an 80% chance of rainfall and the potential for patchy fog early in the day.
Areas around Uptown Charlotte, I-77, and I-85 could see delays from ponding water and reduced visibility during peak travel times. Residents in Gaston, Mecklenburg, and Union counties should prepare for wet roads, lightning, and possible power outages during stronger storms.
Officials recommend avoiding non-essential travel during downpours, charging devices in case of outages, and keeping vehicles fueled in the event of extended delays.
Showers taper by Sunday with partly sunny skies returning, though additional rain chances continue into Monday and Tuesday.
