Charlotte, North Carolina – A sharp temperature swing is underway in the Charlotte area, with freezing overnight lows giving way to mild, springlike afternoons as the week progresses, according to the National Weather Service.

Early Tuesday morning, temperatures at Charlotte Douglas International Airport were near 27 degrees, with clear skies allowing cold air to settle across the region. Overnight lows are expected to remain near 26 degrees, posing a freeze risk for sensitive plants, pets, and exposed pipes.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, conditions improve quickly during the daytime hours. Tuesday is forecast to be sunny, with highs near 45 degrees, followed by another cold night in the mid-20s. A stronger warming trend develops Wednesday, when highs climb to around 51 degrees, with lighter winds and continued dry conditions.

By New Year’s Day, Charlotte is expected to reach a high near 55 degrees, well above late-December averages. Mild conditions continue into Thursday and Friday, with daytime highs holding in the mid-50s and overnight lows gradually moderating into the 30s and lower 40s.

While no hazardous weather alerts are currently in effect, forecasters note a 50 percent chance of rain late Friday night, with rain chances increasing into Saturday. No wintry precipitation is expected as temperatures remain well above freezing during the period.

For commuters, students, and workers, the primary concern will be freezing temperatures during early morning hours, followed by increasingly comfortable afternoons. Drivers should remain alert for patchy frost on bridges and untreated surfaces during the coldest mornings.

The National Weather Service advises residents to monitor forecast updates as rain chances increase toward the weekend and temperatures continue to fluctuate.
