Charlotte, NC – A federal jury in Charlotte found a convicted felon guilty Tuesday of illegally possessing a firearm, following evidence presented at trial tying the defendant to two separate shooting incidents in 2024.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina, Mitchell Clydero Patterson, 38, of Spring Lake, was convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after a multi-day federal trial.

The verdict was announced Tuesday by U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson, alongside officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), and the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Prosecutors said trial testimony and evidence showed Patterson was involved in two violent encounters in Charlotte during the summer of 2024. According to court filings, the first incident occurred on July 23, 2024, when Patterson was allegedly involved in an argument outside a Charlotte-area business. After leaving the scene, he returned and fired multiple shots, striking a bystander’s vehicle.

A second incident occurred on August 14, 2024, at a Charlotte take-out restaurant. According to prosecutors, Patterson left after an altercation, returned a short time later, and fired several shots, striking a young woman in the leg.

Law enforcement officials said CMPD officers followed Patterson into Union County the following day, August 15, 2024, where deputies attempted a traffic stop connected to the investigation.

“Felons are prohibited from carrying firearms for a reason,” Ferguson said in a statement, adding that federal prosecutors will continue pursuing repeat offenders connected to gun violence.

ATF officials emphasized the ongoing collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies to keep firearms out of the hands of prohibited individuals.

Patterson now faces sentencing in federal court at a later date, which has not yet been announced.
