Charlotte, NC – North Carolina’s sports scene is expanding with the launch of two new women’s professional basketball teams in Charlotte and Greensboro. They will join Jacksonville Fla. and Savannah Ga., as the inaugural markets for the upcoming Upshot League.
The league, scheduled to debut in May 2026, is supported by high-profile investors including Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller; former WNBA/NBA executive Ann Meyers Drysdale; former WBA boxing champion Seniesa Estrada; former University of Florida basketball player Patric Young and his PY4 Foundation; actress Annie Q.; and film producer Chris Robert.
“As a champion boxer who has spent the last 23 years breaking barriers in my sport, I am thrilled to join the UpShot Basketball League,” Estrada said. “My goal is to not only elevate the women’s game but to enhance the sport of basketball as a whole by creating more opportunities for talented athletes to pursue their passion and develop professionally.”
According to the league, its mission includes “sparking community-wide Upturns and igniting an upspring of goodwill,” along with creating new opportunities.
The 2006 season will feature 40 games – 20 home and 20 away. Charlotte’s home games will be played at the Bojangles Coliseum. Greensboro’s at Novant Health Fieldhouse, Savannah’s at Enmarket Arena, and Jacksonville’s at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
Season memberships are available now for $44 before tax. Businesses can explore sponsorship opportunities through the league’s corporate partnership program.
