Charleston, West Virginia — The region will experience a sharp and fast-moving weather change over the next few days, transitioning from mild and springlike conditions to gusty winds and plunging temperatures by Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.

Saturday is expected to remain mostly cloudy and cooler than Friday, but generally dry. Afternoon temperatures will range from the mid-40s to mid-50s in the lowlands, with similar readings in the mountains. While clouds will dominate, no significant precipitation is expected for most locations during the day.

Conditions change notably on Sunday as a warm front lifts north across the area, allowing temperatures to surge well above normal for late December. Highs in the lowlands are forecast to reach the 60s and possibly near 70 degrees, while mountain areas warm into the mid-40s to near 60 degrees. Rain showers will accompany the warm front, creating a damp but unusually mild day.

Sunday night marks the arrival of a strong cold front, bringing a line of gusty showers and the potential for a rumble of thunder as it moves through the region. Behind the front, colder air will funnel in quickly, setting the stage for a dramatic temperature drop.

On Monday, high temperatures are expected to occur early in the day, followed by falling readings throughout the afternoon. Lowland temperatures will settle into the 40s to low 50s, while the mountains may see strong winds and a wintry mix as colder air deepens. Gusty winds will add to the chill and could create difficult travel conditions in higher elevations.

Temperatures are expected to bottom out Monday night into Tuesday morning, reinforcing the abrupt shift back to winter. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
