Charleston, W.Va. – Scattered showers and storms will return to much of West Virginia on Wednesday, but forecasters warn Thursday brings a higher chance for stronger storms and heavy rainfall across the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a cold front pushing through will trigger widespread showers and thunderstorms Thursday, with isolated storms possibly reaching severe levels. Damaging winds will be the main hazard, with the Storm Prediction Center placing much of central and northern West Virginia under a marginal risk.

Cities including Huntington, Charleston, Parkersburg, and Clarksburg could see storms develop quickly Thursday afternoon and evening, bringing downpours that may cause brief travel delays. Rural areas and higher elevations, including Elkins and Beckley, should also prepare for strong cells capable of producing gusty winds.

Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time during storms, avoid flooded roadways, and keep phones charged in case of outages. Conditions improve Friday, when sunshine and drier air return just in time for the weekend.

More advisories may be issued if storms trend stronger than expected Thursday.
