Charleston, WV – After a brief stretch of dry weather today, forecasters say wintry conditions could return to much of West Virginia by late Thursday and continue into Friday morning, bringing light snow and a potential mix of freezing rain and drizzle.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, today will remain mostly cloudy but dry for most locations, with temperatures near seasonal norms. A cold front arriving Thursday will bring a band of light snow showers during the morning and midday hours, mainly across the northern and central counties, including Beckley, Clarksburg, and Elkins.

Snowfall amounts are expected to remain light—generally a dusting to around one inch—but could create slick spots, particularly on untreated roads and elevated surfaces.

By Friday, another system will approach from the west, pulling warmer air aloft and setting up a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain across portions of the state. Precipitation could briefly transition to rain in some lowland areas before tapering off Friday evening.

Forecasters note that timing and precipitation type may vary depending on elevation and surface temperatures. Mountain communities such as Snowshoe, Marlinton, and Sutton could see steadier snow through early Friday, while lower valleys, including Charleston and Huntington, may experience a light glaze of freezing drizzle.

Residents are urged to use caution on the roads, particularly during the Thursday night and Friday morning commutes. The National Weather Service advises monitoring updated forecasts as the storm track becomes clearer.

Cold conditions will persist into the weekend, with highs in the 30s and low 40s and overnight lows dipping into the 20s.
