Charleston, WV – West Virginia faces a windy and potentially stormy day today, with increasing chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms through this afternoon and evening. Some storms, especially across northern parts of the state, could become strong to severe. Damaging winds remain the primary hazard.

According to the US National Weather Service Charleston, scattered storms are expected to develop as daytime heating interacts with an approaching disturbance. Areas north of Charleston—including Morgantown, Clarksburg, Parkersburg, and the northern mountains—have the highest chance of seeing stronger thunderstorms. While hail and tornado threats remain low, isolated damaging wind gusts are possible.

A Wind Advisory goes into effect from 7 p.m. today through 10 a.m. Monday, covering the northeast mountains and adjacent regions. Forecasters warn that winds could gust up to 50 mph, especially in higher elevations. These winds may topple unsecured outdoor items, snap tree limbs, and contribute to localized power outages.

Even outside thunderstorms, gusty winds will persist tonight and Sunday as colder, drier air moves in behind the system. Travel may become difficult for high-profile vehicles, particularly along ridge tops and exposed highways.

Rain chances diminish late tonight, with Sunday and Monday expected to stay mainly dry but breezy. Temperatures will gradually cool after today’s storm potential, settling into a more typical mid-November pattern.

Residents across northern and central West Virginia—including Wheeling, Fairmont, Elkins, and the higher mountain communities—should stay weather-aware through the afternoon and evening. The strongest storms are expected during peak heating, with winds strengthening after sunset.
