Charleston, West Virginia – Rain is expected to spread statewide Sunday, creating wet travel conditions along I-64 and I-77.
According to the US National Weather Service in Charleston, high pressure will bring a dry but cold end to the week Friday, with sunny skies and below-normal temperatures across much of the state. Conditions will remain quiet through Friday evening.
A southern stream system will approach Saturday, bringing increasing clouds and warmer temperatures. Light rain showers are expected to develop during the day Saturday, becoming more widespread Saturday night into Sunday as low pressure tracks south of the area.
Sunday is forecast to be the wettest day of the weekend, with rain spreading across much of West Virginia. Periods of steady rainfall may impact travel along major corridors including I-64 through Charleston and Huntington, I-77 near Beckley and Parkersburg, and US-50 in the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Forecasters note a potential wintry mix over the northeast mountains, including higher elevations near Snowshoe and along portions of US-219. However, warmer air should limit widespread winter impacts outside the mountain regions.
Conditions are expected to improve quickly Monday as drier air returns under rebuilding high pressure. Temperatures will trend warmer early next week compared to Friday’s colder conditions.
Drivers planning weekend travel, including students returning to campus and commuters preparing for Monday’s workweek, should monitor updated forecasts and allow extra travel time Sunday.
