Charleston, WV – A potent low-pressure system will move across the region today, bringing widespread, soaking rain that could become heavy at times tonight into Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.
Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected across much of central and southern West Virginia, with locally higher amounts possible in mountainous areas. While the rainfall will be largely beneficial, forecasters caution that minor flooding could occur, especially in poor drainage or low-lying areas.
Rain is expected to increase in coverage and intensity by late afternoon, peaking overnight before gradually tapering off Thursday evening. High water levels on creeks and small streams may persist into early Thursday.
The NWS notes that the heaviest rainfall corridor will likely stretch from Charleston eastward toward Beckley and Elkins, with precipitation chances near 100% overnight. Drivers are urged to use caution and avoid flooded roadways.
Conditions are expected to dry out by late Thursday, leading to a cooler, calmer weekend with seasonal temperatures in the 50s.
