Charleston, West Virginia – Unseasonably mild weather will continue across central Appalachia through Saturday, followed by increasing rain chances, gusty winds, and a turn toward colder conditions this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, breezy conditions are expected at times Friday ahead of an approaching cold front. The chance for showers continues tonight as the front slows across the region, with a round of widespread rain developing late tonight into Saturday as an area of low pressure moves through.

Forecasters said locally heavy rainfall is possible, particularly across southwest Virginia and eastern and southern West Virginia. Saturated soils combined with periods of breezy to gusty winds may increase the risk of isolated tree damage and localized power outages.

Temperatures will remain above normal through Saturday before colder air begins moving in Saturday night. By Sunday, conditions are expected to turn colder and somewhat drier, though the National Weather Service noted a chance for snow showers on Sunday, especially in higher elevations, accompanied by gusty winds. Little to no accumulation is expected at lower elevations.

Rain chances gradually decrease Saturday night as the system exits the region. By Monday, high pressure is expected to bring a return to more tranquil weather conditions.

The National Weather Service emphasized that while severe weather is not anticipated, periods of heavy rain and wind could still create localized impacts. Residents should monitor forecasts and be prepared for changing conditions, particularly during heavier rainfall late Friday night and Saturday.

Commuters, students, and weekend travelers should allow extra time, remain cautious on wet roadways, and be mindful of falling branches during gusty periods.

Additional updates will be issued as conditions evolve across the region.
