Charleston, W.Va. – Drivers across central and southern West Virginia can expect improving road conditions by this afternoon, but another system is lining up that could bring rain changing to snow along I-64, I-77 and I-79 by late Sunday night.
Showers will taper off through the morning hours Thursday, giving way to drier conditions for the second half of the day. Temperatures will remain mild, with lowland highs reaching the upper 40s to low 50s. Warmer air builds in Friday and Saturday, pushing afternoon readings into the 50s and even low 60s across the Kanawha Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a new system will approach Sunday evening, bringing the potential for a wintry mix of rain and snow that could linger into early next week. While specific accumulation amounts remain uncertain, falling temperatures Sunday night raise concern for slick conditions developing before the Monday morning commute.
If temperatures drop into the upper 20s to low 30s by daybreak Monday, bridges and overpasses along I-64 near Institute and I-77 north toward Sissonville could freeze first. Mountain communities along the I-79 corridor may see a quicker changeover to snow.
Drivers should monitor forecast updates through the weekend and plan for extra travel time late Sunday night into Monday morning. Additional advisories may be issued as confidence increases in timing and precipitation type across the Charleston metro area.
