Charleston, W.Va. – Heavy downpours and afternoon thunderstorms could drench much of West Virginia through Tuesday night, with a risk of localized flash flooding in low-lying areas and poor-drainage zones.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a moist and unstable air mass is fueling daily thunderstorm development, especially between noon and 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Cities including Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, and Beckley show 60% to 70% chances for rain during peak afternoon hours.

Storms may lead to localized flooding in areas like Pikeville, Bluefield, and Clarksburg, particularly where rainfall rates are high and ground saturation persists. Drivers should watch for ponding on roads and avoid travel through flooded areas. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and remain weather-aware in the afternoons.

The pattern continues a classic July setup across the Appalachians, where daytime heating triggers frequent showers and storms. Monday’s flood risk remains mostly “marginal,” but that could change with additional rainfall.

More updates may follow if flood watches are issued.
