Charleston, WV – Residents across West Virginia and neighboring states face a lingering flash flood threat today as rounds of showers and thunderstorms continue through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, heavy rainfall this morning may lead to isolated high water issues across low-lying areas and roadways. The storms are expected to persist into the afternoon as a cold front moves across the Ohio Valley, before conditions briefly calm tonight.

Forecast maps show precipitation chances between 70% and 95% across much of West Virginia, eastern Ohio, and northeastern Kentucky through Thursday afternoon. Cities including Charleston, Clarksburg, Parkersburg, and Elkins could see the heaviest rainfall. The NWS noted that even localized downpours may cause sudden rises in streams and creeks.

More rain is in the forecast Friday, which may add to flooding concerns if the ground remains saturated. Emergency officials urge drivers not to attempt crossing flooded roads and to remain alert for flash flood warnings.

This rain threat extends across the tri-state region, including areas near Athens, OH, and Ashland, KY, with additional rainfall possible into the weekend.

Residents are advised to monitor local weather updates and prepare for potential delays during commutes today and Friday.
