Charleston, W.Va. – Heavy showers and thunderstorms will drench much of West Virginia today, bringing a heightened risk of flash flooding in flood-prone areas. Roads and low-lying spots may quickly fill with water where storms repeatedly pass.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the severe weather threat remains low, but localized heavy downpours are possible through Thursday. Areas that see multiple rounds of rain will face the greatest flood danger, especially along smaller streams and poor-drainage zones.

Rain and storms will be widespread today and Thursday, with temperatures in the 70s to low 80s in the mountains and 80s in the lowlands. By Friday, activity will be mostly confined to the mountains, while the rest of the state warms into the mid-80s and low 90s.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and to use extra caution during periods of heavy rain. Residents should keep cell phones charged for weather alerts and monitor local updates.

Storm chances drop heading into the weekend, but heat will build, making Saturday the warmest day of the period.
