Charleston, West Virginia – Snow is expected to return to central and southern West Virginia tonight, bringing accumulating snowfall and slick travel conditions through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.
Forecasters said snow will begin around 8 p.m. Friday, with the bulk of accumulation occurring overnight into early Saturday. In the mountains, steady snow is expected to produce 2 to 5 inches, with localized totals up to 7 inches possible. Outside the higher elevations, including parts of the Charleston metro and lowlands, snowfall amounts are forecast to range from 1 to 2 inches.
The National Weather Service warned that snow-covered roads and reduced visibility may create hazardous driving conditions, especially overnight and during early Saturday morning hours. Temperatures are expected to remain near or below freezing during the heaviest snowfall, allowing accumulation on untreated roadways.
Snow is expected to taper off into more scattered showers during the day Saturday, though additional localized accumulation remains possible. Even where snowfall is lighter, intermittent bursts could briefly worsen travel conditions.
Officials urged drivers to use caution, slow down on snow-covered roads, and allow extra travel time. Confidence in snowfall totals is moderate, with variability expected based on elevation and the development of heavier snow bands.
Residents across central West Virginia should continue to monitor forecast updates as conditions evolve overnight.
