Charleston, West Virginia – Snow squalls, extreme cold, and high winds are expected to impact much of West Virginia from Friday evening through Saturday morning, creating dangerous travel and outdoor conditions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, snow squalls and heavy snow showers are forecast to move across the area this evening into early Saturday morning. The most intense activity is expected between 9 PM and 3 AM, with rapid changes in visibility and road conditions possible.

Mountain areas could see an additional 1 to 4 inches of snow, accompanied by gusty winds. Lowland locations may receive a dusting to 1 inch, though localized higher amounts are possible under stronger snow squalls. Snow squalls can cause sudden whiteout conditions and quickly slick roadways, particularly along Interstate 64, Interstate 77, U.S. Route 19, and U.S. Route 33.

In addition to snow, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for portions of the region. Wind chill values could drop as low as -30 degrees in northwest Pocahontas and southeast Randolph counties, with -20 degree wind chills possible in surrounding mountain areas. A Cold Weather Advisory covers much of the remaining area, with wind chills near -10 degrees.

A High Wind Warning is also in effect, with northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 60 mph possible from late Friday night through Saturday evening. Gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects and could down trees or power lines.

Drivers, overnight workers, and early-morning commuters are urged to use caution, limit unnecessary travel, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
