Charleston, WV – Dry conditions today will give way to rain tonight into Christmas Day as an active weather pattern settles over the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, rain is expected to spread into much of West Virginia tonight and continue through Thursday. A few rumbles of thunder may be possible overnight, particularly in the lowlands, though widespread severe weather is not anticipated.

Temperatures will remain mild through Christmas Day, with highs generally ranging from the mid-40s to low 60s depending on elevation. Mountain areas will stay cooler, while lowland communities see the warmest readings. Overnight lows are expected to range from the mid-30s in the mountains to near 50 degrees elsewhere.

Rain chances increase again Friday as another system moves through the area. Forecasters expect a break in precipitation on Saturday before the next round of rain arrives Sunday ahead of an approaching cold front.

That front is expected to bring a notable change late Sunday into Monday. Gusty winds and much colder air will overspread the region, with rain potentially transitioning to a wintry mix late Sunday night into Monday morning. Any lingering precipitation by Monday should become confined mainly to upslope snow in the mountains.

While impacts are expected to be limited, changing conditions could affect holiday travelers and commuters, especially late Sunday night as temperatures drop.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates as timing and precipitation types may change through the holiday weekend.
