Charleston, West Virginia – Triple-digit heat will grip much of central and western West Virginia from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, as a widespread heat advisory blankets the region. The National Weather Service warns that dangerous heat and humidity could push heat index values well above 100°F, particularly in Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, and surrounding counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the advisory covers a broad swath of the state—including Kanawha, Cabell, Wood, and Jackson counties—where afternoon highs combined with oppressive humidity will create life-threatening conditions for anyone outdoors. Power outages and road impacts are possible if demand spikes or if brief storms develop.

Cities like Charleston and Huntington are forecast to see the heat index reach between 103°F and 107°F, especially in the late afternoon. Emergency management officials urge residents to stay in air-conditioned spaces, drink extra fluids, and avoid outdoor work during peak heat. Children, seniors, and pets are especially vulnerable—never leave anyone in a parked car.

While brief afternoon showers may bring spotty relief starting late Friday, most areas will remain dangerously hot through the weekend. Prepare now for continued high temperatures and humidity, and check on neighbors who may need extra help.
Heat advisories remain in effect until at least 8 p.m. Thursday; additional alerts may follow if oppressive conditions persist.
