Charleston, WV – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect Tuesday morning for areas along the Southeast Ohio–West Virginia border, where a brief period of light freezing rain could develop around sunrise, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston. Even minimal ice accumulation could create slick conditions on sidewalks, bridges, and roadways during the morning commute.

According to NWS Charleston, precipitation will arrive early Tuesday morning, beginning as freezing rain in spots that remain below 32°F. This light glaze—generally 0.01″ or less—will be enough to produce hazardous travel conditions, especially in counties near the border, including Athens, Meigs, Gallia, Washington, and Morgan in Southeast Ohio, along with nearby West Virginia counties such as Wood, Jackson, Roane, and Mason.

Forecasters say the freezing rain threat will be relatively short-lived. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing within one to two hours after sunrise, transitioning all precipitation to plain rain by late morning. However, the early timing coincides with the busiest portion of the morning commute, increasing the potential for travel delays.

Further south and east into central West Virginia, temperatures should warm quickly enough to prevent freezing rain, with precipitation holding off until after the freeze risk ends. Across Southeast Ohio and bordering WV counties, total rainfall between ½ inch and 1 inch is expected Tuesday into Tuesday night.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution, reduce speed, and watch for slick spots—particularly on shaded roads, overpasses, and elevated bridges, which tend to ice first.

Residents across the Mid-Ohio Valley and border communities should monitor conditions closely, as even minor ice amounts can cause significant impacts during the early-morning travel window.
