Charleston, West Virginia – Fires could ignite and spread rapidly across parts of eastern Kentucky within hours Saturday as dry air and gusty winds peak during the afternoon burn window.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, humidity levels are dropping to 20–30% Saturday afternoon while winds increase from 5–10 mph to higher gusts by Sunday, reaching 15–25 mph. The agency highlights Lawrence, Carter, and Boyd counties as areas of greatest concern, where dry fuels remain in place despite light rainfall Friday.

Kentucky officials are enforcing a burn ban from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. across woodland and brushland areas through the end of April. Forestry crews warn that even small sparks from equipment, cigarettes, or vehicles parked on dry grass could trigger fast-moving fires under these conditions.

Drivers along U.S. 23 and rural routes near the Ohio River should watch for reduced visibility if smoke develops. Residents are urged to delay any outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and avoid activities that create sparks during peak afternoon hours.

Conditions briefly ease overnight but intensify again by late Sunday morning as winds strengthen. Additional advisories or restrictions could be issued if fire activity increases.
