Charleston, West Virginia – Snow showers, slick roads, and dangerous cold are impacting the Charleston area Thursday as multiple National Weather Service advisories remain in effect across central and northern West Virginia.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect now through 1 p.m. Thursday for portions of the region, including nearby counties north and east of Charleston. Snow showers and brief snow squalls are expected to continue through the morning commute, producing slippery road conditions and reduced visibility.
Snow accumulations across the lower elevations near Charleston are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches, while higher elevations farther northeast could receive 3 to 8 inches. Forecasters note that while snowfall rates will generally be light, rapidly falling temperatures may cause wet roads to freeze, increasing the risk of icy travel.
In addition, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for parts of the region, with wind chill values dropping as low as -10°F to -17°F. The National Weather Service warns that exposure to these conditions could result in hypothermia or frostbite if proper precautions are not taken. Some areas remain under this advisory through 7 a.m. Friday.
Temperatures Thursday are expected to remain in the teens to lower 20s, with gusty winds contributing to the bitter cold. Light snow showers are forecast to diminish later today, but lake-enhanced snow showers may persist into Friday morning in parts of northern West Virginia.
The National Weather Service advises drivers to allow extra travel time, use caution on bridges and untreated roads, and dress in layers when outdoors.
Commuters, students, and outdoor workers in the Charleston area should prepare for hazardous travel conditions and dangerous cold exposure throughout the day.
