Charleston, WV – Residents across West Virginia should prepare for a blast of Arctic air late next week, as forecasters warn of subzero wind chills and single-digit temperatures between Thursday, December 11, and Monday, December 15. The system will deliver the coldest conditions of the season to cities including Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown, and Beckley.
According to the National Weather Service Charleston, an Arctic high-pressure system will push southward into the Mountain State late Thursday, sending morning lows into the single digits across much of the state and below zero in higher elevations. Wind chills may drop to –10°F or colder, particularly during early mornings and overnight hours.
The system will be mostly dry, though light snow showers or flurries are possible across the eastern mountains. Forecasters note that gusty northwest winds could make it feel much colder, even in areas without measurable snow.
Meteorologists are urging residents to limit time outdoors, layer clothing, and protect pipes and pets during the extended freeze. Frostbite can occur in under 15 minutes when wind chills dip below zero.
The Arctic air mass will remain over the region through Monday, December 16, before a gradual warm-up begins midweek. Officials say additional cold intrusions could follow later in December.
