West Virginia – Gray skies hang low over the Kanawha Valley this morning, and the cold has a way of biting through gloves. Pavement looks dry for now, but winter is far from finished. Light snow is already lining up for midweek, with another round threatening to complicate travel as the weekend approaches.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, snow chances increase by Thursday, with temperatures hovering close to freezing during the day. Highs are expected to reach the upper 30s, while nighttime readings dip into the teens and lower 20s. That temperature swing raises concerns for melting snow refreezing after sunset.

Charleston and surrounding parts of Kanawha County could see light accumulations Thursday, mainly during the day. Even minor snowfall may cause slick spots on bridges and untreated roads, especially along I-64 and Route 119. Drivers should plan extra time during the afternoon commute and remain alert for changing road conditions.

Colder air tightens its grip Thursday night into Friday morning. Another system may bring snow back to the area Friday, with precipitation chances near 60 percent. Daytime warming Friday could lead to wet pavement, followed by flash freezing after dark as temperatures fall quickly.

By the weekend, conditions trend quieter but remain cold. Skies turn partly sunny Saturday, though refreezing remains a concern during early mornings. Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook hints at a warming trend late next week, offering early signs of a February thaw.

Plan ahead if traveling late week. Keep extra distance between vehicles, and watch for black ice after sunset. Seeing slick spots where you live? Share what conditions look like in your neighborhood.
