Charleston, W.Va. – Snow will overspread central West Virginia by 1 a.m. Sunday, bringing 4 to 5 inches through 1 a.m. Tuesday and creating slick bridges and hazardous road conditions for the Monday morning commute. Gusts up to 35 mph could produce areas of blowing snow, especially in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday through 1 a.m. Tuesday for Kanawha, Roane, Calhoun, Logan, Boone, Gilmer, Harrison, Wyoming, and southeast Pocahontas counties. Periods of steady snow will develop overnight and continue at times into Monday evening.
Bridges and overpasses will ice first before sunrise Sunday.
Interstates 64 and 79, along with U.S. Route 119 near Logan and Route 50 near Clarksburg, may become snow-covered, particularly on untreated secondary roads and elevated ramps. Communities including Charleston, South Charleston, Bridgeport, and Marlinton could see reduced visibility during heavier bursts Sunday night into Monday.
Residents should delay nonessential travel and check WV 511 for updated road conditions before heading out. Allow extra stopping distance and use caution on hills and curves.
Light snow may linger into late Monday night, and the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday.
