Charleston, South Carolina – Swimmers and boaters along South Carolina’s coast are being urged to stay out of the water as Hurricane Erin stirs up dangerous surf and rip current conditions expected to last through the end of the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, waves as high as 13 feet are building across Atlantic waters, with breaking surf over 6 feet expected at area beaches through Thursday evening. The risk of rip currents remains high for all beaches, and a High Surf Advisory is in effect through Thursday, alongside a Small Craft Advisory for most coastal waters through Friday.

Coastal flooding is another growing concern, particularly in Charleston and coastal Colleton Counties. Evening high tides starting Wednesday are expected to push water levels into minor to moderate flooding thresholds, with the highest surges possible by Wednesday and Thursday nights. While major flooding is not forecast, it can’t be ruled out during Wednesday evening’s tide cycle.

Residents and visitors should avoid swimming, stay off jetties and rocks, and check tide forecasts regularly. Beachgoers are encouraged to heed local advisories and signage.

Watches and advisories remain active through at least Friday, with the next update scheduled for 6 a.m. Wednesday.
