Charleston, South Carolina – Cold and gusty conditions will drive wind chills into the teens and lower 20s across coastal South Carolina early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, wind chills are forecast to drop into the upper teens to lower 20s during the early morning hours Sunday, particularly before sunrise. The coldest conditions are expected inland and across portions of Berkeley, Dorchester, and Colleton counties, with slightly milder values closer to the immediate coast.

Forecast minimum wind chills include readings near 18 to 22 degrees around North Charleston and Summerville along Interstate 26, near 19 to 21 degrees around Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms along I-526 and U.S. 17, and low 20s near Beaufort and Walterboro along U.S. 21 and U.S. 17. Portions of inland southeast Georgia may also see wind chills near 20 degrees.

The cold conditions are being driven by lingering northwest winds combined with overnight temperatures falling into the 30s. Even modest winds will make it feel significantly colder than the actual air temperature, increasing the risk of cold exposure for anyone outdoors for extended periods.

The National Weather Service advises residents to dress in lightweight, warm layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors early Sunday. Pets should be brought indoors, and precautions should be taken when using space heaters, including keeping flammable materials at least three feet away.

Commuters traveling early Sunday morning along I-26, I-95, and U.S. 17 should be prepared for cold conditions at bus stops, parking areas, and outdoor job sites. This may be especially relevant for students, service workers, and overnight shift employees heading home before sunrise.

Temperatures will gradually rebound later Sunday morning as winds diminish and sunshine increases, reducing wind chill concerns by late morning.
