Charleston, S.C. – Drivers along I-26 and US-17 should prepare now for wind gusts up to 60 mph as a squall line pushes into the Lowcountry between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday, raising the risk of downed trees, blocked lanes and scattered power outages before the evening commute ends.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Level 2 out of 5 slight risk for severe thunderstorms covers much of southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry this afternoon and evening. The primary hazard is damaging straight-line wind gusts up to 60 mph, with an isolated brief tornado possible within stronger cells. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning will also accompany the line.

Storms are expected to reach inland communities such as Allendale and Sylvania between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., then track toward the I-95 corridor and into the Charleston metro between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Areas east of I-95, including Mount Pleasant, Summerville and Moncks Corner, could see storms linger until 8 p.m.

High-profile vehicles on the Don Holt Bridge along I-526 and drivers crossing the Ravenel Bridge on US-17 should use caution as wind gusts intensify. Loose outdoor items can become airborne in seconds.

Residents should secure patio furniture, charge devices and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings. If a warning is issued, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows.

Conditions improve later Sunday night once the line clears the coast, but additional alerts could be issued if stronger cells develop ahead of the main band.
