Charleston, SC – Severe thunderstorms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph this afternoon and evening across the Lowcountry and southeast Georgia, potentially impacting travel along Interstate 26 and Interstate 95.

According to the US National Weather Service in Charleston, a large area of showers and thunderstorms will move through the region as low pressure tracks west of the area today before shifting north tonight.

The greatest chances for thunderstorms are expected between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., with storms becoming organized across parts of southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Forecasters say the primary hazards include damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and cloud-to-ground lightning. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Communities including Charleston, Summerville, Beaufort, Savannah, and Hilton Head Island fall within the area of concern.

Drivers along I-26 near Charleston and I-95 through coastal Georgia may encounter sudden heavy rain, strong crosswinds, and brief visibility reductions during stronger cells.

Loose outdoor items could be blown around, and isolated power outages are possible where wind gusts are strongest.

Residents are urged to bring loose outdoor items inside, monitor local weather updates, and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings throughout the day.

Even brief severe storms can create hazardous driving conditions during peak travel hours.

Storms are expected to diminish later tonight as the system moves north.
