Charleston, South Carolina — After a quiet and dry New Year’s Eve tonight and New Year’s Day on Thursday, confidence is increasing that a storm system will bring needed rainfall Saturday across the South Carolina Lowcountry and southeast Georgia.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, rainfall totals of 0.5 to 1.0 inch are increasingly likely on Saturday, with locally higher amounts possible. Probabilities for exceeding 0.50 inch range from 60–80% across much of the region, including Charleston, Beaufort, Walterboro, Moncks Corner, Savannah, and Statesboro.
Roadways that may be impacted during periods of steady rain include I-26, I-95, US-17, US-21, US-78, and US-52, particularly in urban areas where ponding can develop during heavier showers. While flooding is not expected, brief reductions in visibility and slick travel conditions are possible.
New Year’s Eve conditions remain dry with no weather hazards expected tonight. New Year’s Day (Thursday) will also be quiet, allowing travel and outdoor plans to proceed without interruption before the weekend system arrives.
The National Weather Service notes the rainfall will be beneficial, as much-needed moisture spreads across the Lowcountry and coastal Georgia. Trends continue to point upward in rainfall confidence, and residents are encouraged to monitor updates as Saturday approaches.
Drivers should plan for slower travel during rain Saturday, allow extra time on interstates and coastal highways, and use caution on wet roads.
