Charleston, South Carolina – Forecasters say it is still too early to provide specific details, but potential winter weather impacts are possible this weekend as much colder air spreads into coastal South Carolina.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a winter weather system could affect southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia later this week. Very cold air is expected to move into the region, creating conditions that could support freezing or frozen precipitation, depending on how the system develops.
NWS Charleston reports that confidence is increasing that at least minor winter weather impacts will occur in portions of the region. However, confidence remains very low regarding exact timing, precipitation type, and potential accumulation amounts, emphasizing that forecast details are likely to change.
Probability graphics shared by the agency show a low to moderate likelihood of minor winter storm impacts across parts of the Charleston area, particularly inland locations. Even minor winter precipitation can lead to slick road conditions, especially in a region where freezing weather is relatively uncommon.
If freezing rain, sleet, or snow occurs, roadways could become hazardous, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. Motorists traveling along Interstate 26, U.S. Highway 17, U.S. Highway 52, and key coastal bridges should be alert for icy spots, as bridges and elevated surfaces tend to freeze first.
The National Weather Service urges residents not to focus on specific snowfall or ice totals at this stage, noting that the system remains several days away. Instead, officials recommend monitoring forecast updates closely as confidence improves later in the week.
Commuters, students, and weekend travelers in the Charleston area should be prepared for possible delays if winter weather develops, especially during peak travel times late Friday into Saturday.
