Charleston, SC – Residents in Charleston and coastal Colleton Counties are being urged to prepare for minor flooding this afternoon as a coastal flood advisory is now in effect. The National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston reports the advisory is active Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
According to the NWS, high tide is expected around 2:24 p.m., with flooding possible one to two hours before and after peak tide. Minor saltwater inundation is likely to impact low-lying roads, making some routes impassable, and may also cause minor flooding of nearby properties.
Officials warn that downtown Charleston and other coastal areas are particularly at risk. Drivers are advised to avoid flooded roads and use alternate routes when possible. Even shallow saltwater flooding can damage vehicles and create hazardous travel conditions.
The NWS also noted that this type of flooding is typical during periods of higher tides but emphasized that residents should stay alert for changing conditions. Motorists and property owners in low-lying neighborhoods should take precautions throughout the afternoon.
This advisory is expected to expire by 4 p.m. as tides recede.
