Charleston, South Carolina – Flash flooding closed roads and swamped intersections in Mount Pleasant by early Friday afternoon as thunderstorms drenched the Charleston coastline with up to 2 inches of rain and more on the way.

According to emergency management and the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 2:30 p.m. EDT for Charleston County. Radar shows additional rainfall could bring another 1 to 2 inches, particularly over Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, and nearby low-lying areas.

Officials reported flooding on major roads, including parts of I-526 between mile markers 29 and 31, and warned drivers to avoid underpasses and poorly drained streets. Areas impacted include Boone Hall Plantation, Mount Pleasant Towne Centre, Seaside Farms, and East Cooper Regional Medical Center.

Residents are urged to stay off flooded roads and avoid driving through water-covered streets. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key safety reminder, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

The warning may be extended if storms stall or intensify. Stay alert for new advisories through the evening.
