Charleston, South Carolina – Elevated fire weather conditions are expected across the Charleston area Thursday, prompting a Fire Danger Statement, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.
Forecasters say northwest winds will gust between 20 and 25 miles per hour today, while relative humidity levels drop to between 20 and 25 percent. This combination of dry air and gusty winds increases the likelihood that any fire could spread rapidly and become difficult to contain.
The Fire Danger Statement is in effect Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and covers much of southeastern South Carolina, including Charleston and surrounding coastal and inland counties. Ongoing dry conditions across the region are contributing to the elevated risk.
The National Weather Service warns that fires can escape control more easily under these conditions, especially in grassy or wooded areas. Even small ignition sources, such as discarded cigarettes, sparks from equipment, or outdoor burning, could lead to fast-moving fires.
Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid outdoor burning, postpone activities that may produce sparks, and properly dispose of smoking materials. Those using equipment outdoors should ensure machinery is well maintained and operated with caution.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken later this evening, allowing fire danger conditions to improve after sunset as humidity levels recover.
Emergency managers and fire officials urge residents to remain vigilant throughout the day and to report any signs of wildfire immediately.
Outdoor workers, landscapers, and residents in the Charleston area should take extra precautions today due to the elevated fire weather threat.
