Charleston, South Carolina – Heavy rain and thunderstorms are causing minor flooding across James Island, Johns Island, and parts of Charleston Tuesday afternoon, with a Flood Advisory in effect until 3 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, Doppler radar detected as much as 1.5 inches of rain over the area by 1:40 p.m., with another 1 to 2 inches possible through the early afternoon. Low-lying and poor drainage areas—including Battery Point, Maybank Bridge, and Charleston Executive Airport—are most at risk for quick ponding and flooded roads.

Local impacts are expected to be most severe on James Island, Johns Island, Folly Beach, and around major county parks. Residents should avoid non-essential travel, especially near underpasses or poorly drained roads. If you encounter water on the roadway, turn around—most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Short bursts of heavy rain could disrupt outdoor plans, sports camps, and access to popular areas like James Island County Park. Minor property flooding is possible in neighborhoods with poor drainage. The Charleston area has seen rapid-onset flooding like this before during summer storms, and quick changes are common when rain bands stall.

The Flood Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. Tuesday, with further alerts possible if storms continue. Stay tuned for additional updates and be alert for rising water.
